The Wurzels prove to be the icing on the cake.

A cake topper depicting West Country musicians The Wurzels is to be auctioned off to raise money for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Association (PSPA).

Wurzels Topper
The edible topper has been made by Lesley Marshall from Taunton, who originally designed it to enter The Big Cake Show in Exeter earlier this year. Now Lesley, who runs her own cake designing business,
Hip-PopCakes, is donating the 14"x 7.5"x 9" high cake topper to PSPA to raise money for the charity.

“I was quite nervous at entering the competition as I'd never entered a competition like this before." said Lesley. Wurzels Topper close up"The theme was ‘South West Inspired’ and I thought what encompasses the essence of the South West and The West Country more than The Wurzels?”

When Lesley didn’t win the competition a furore broke out on social media, and when one of The Wurzels’ representatives saw the cake topper, they contacted Lesley. Lesley said: “It was quite overwhelming. I was upset that I had lost the competition but then I was contacted by a representative from The Wurzels and was offered this great opportunity. It’s fantastic,” said Lesley.

Wurzel’s lead singer Tommy Banner has supported PSPA since his wife Christine Banner developed symptoms of the condition PSP in 2006. Tommy often speaks about the condition and the need to raise more awareness in support of PSPA.

Lesley said: “When I was told about the condition I had no idea what it was. After researching online I realised It was a great opportunity to raise awareness of such a little known condition.”
“The whole cake topper is edible. I hope it brings as much joy to the winner, as it did to me when I made it,” she added.

The auction will start on 7th July 2014 via http://charity.ebay.co.uk/ and will be live for 9 days. For more information on PSP visit www.pspassociation.org.uk or call 01327 322410.

The Mendip Windfarm Song.

With a return to Adge Cutler’s style of involving observations of life in the West Country “The Mendip Windfarm Song” is aimed at highlighting the proliferation of proposals for wind turbines across the West Country and furthermore the entire UK, disregarding the views of the local communities they are imposed upon.

The song was penned after hearing from upset locals in the quiet village of Laverton, near Norton St Philip where the band's HQ is based. The villagers were concerned about the effects of a proposed 66m turbine and news of the song has led to huge support for its release.

Sil Willcox, a spokesman for the band says “Renewable energy has to be considered as an important part of the make up of our energy solutions. However imposing these cost inefficient turbines on communities after they have been opposed by local parishes and refused by local planners seems very unfair and undemocratic."

The Mendip Windfarm Song is available to download on iTunes - Amazon MP3 - Deezer.

Tribute to Adge 40 Years on.

Professor Wurzel contemplates, reminisces and commemorates the 40th anniversary of the death of Adge Cutler and the founding of the ‘farmyard four’ – The Wurzels.

Adge CutlerOn May 5th it will be 40 years since Adge Cutler – founder of ‘The Wurzels’ - was tragically killed whilst driving back home following a gig at the Crystal Rooms in Hereford.

Adge was a man of many talents - poet, story teller, playwright and, most prominently, singer and song writer. He had founded The Wurzels some eight years before his death to accompany him on the gigs he was already performing all over the country. Very soon Adge and his Wurzels were to be seen and heard on numerous TV and radio shows - even entering the pop charts. Adge’s passing occurred as the fame of “Adge Cutler & The Wurzels” was spreading far and wide and tours abroad were being scheduled.

A true west-country family man to the core Adge was, and indeed still is, sorely missed by his family, fellow band-mates and many thousands of fans across the country.

Ironically it was after Adge's death that The Wurzels achieved the most success with No1 singles and numerous chart hits throughout the 70's and 80's - and now 40 years on Pete and Tommy, Morgy and Sedge are still belting out his songs to sellout gigs all across the country – what more can be said other than ‘Cheers Adge, thanks for everything’ and long may ‘The Wurzels’ continue to keep Adge’s memory alive and kicking!

(The Wurzels are playing at an old haunt of Adge’s – “The Fleece & Firkin” in Bristol on May 5th – a gig not to be missed!)

But such a tribute would not be complete if we didn’t hear from Tommy and Pete, Adge’s two surviving original Wurzels...

"Little did I think on 5th November 1967 on my very first gig as a Wurzel, then on the morning of 5th May 1974 when our then manager, John Miles phoned me with the dreadful news of Adge's fatal car accident, that here in May 2014 I would still be a Wurzel. I often thank Adge for giving me the chance to come to Somerset to live and work, and only wish he had been alive to see how popular his songs and ours still are to this day.
I don't think he would still have been performing, because I doubt if he could have kept up with the pace of today's shows, but I'm sure he would still have been writing humorous, inventive songs for us, in his own inimitable style.
You can imagine Archangel Adge singing his songs to those on high, with backing
vocals by Shag Connors and Fred Wedlock. I have great memories of my many enjoyable hours spent in your company Adge.
Rest in peace, boy.
From the only ‘Scottish Wurzel in Captivity’.
" -Tommy Banner

"I first met Adge when I was with my band The Rebels. He was very excited and told me that he was going on the road with his own outfit and singing songs that he had already written.
Who'da thought that several years after that, I would become one of his blokes!
Adge will always be with us - good 'n mate."
-Pete Budd

So to all you Wurzel fans out there, please raise a glass of zider to the memory of Adge Cutler!
-Professor Wurzel.

The Wurzels Abroad!

After working long hours in his barn Professor Wurzel has come up with the world’s first ever 'Foreign Wurzel Disco-graphy'!

It’s a little known fact that both Adge Cutler and The Wurzels released records far far beyond the confines of Nailsea and Bristol.
In the days before the internet and itunes a pop group who wanted their music to be heard in foreign climes would have to persuade the record companies to have those records pressed and released overseas. For The Wurzels this first happened way back in1972 when Adge Cutler & The Wurzels’ 7” vinyl single ‘Little Darlin’ was simultaneously released in England, France, Holland, Germany, Canada and even Japan!

This success was due to be followed up with world tours but in 1974 with the tragic death of Adge these plans had to be put on hold. However, once the remaining Wurzels had made the brave decision to carry on without Adge and keep his name and his music alive and prospering, record companies across the globe decided to release Wurzelmania on the world.

Over the next few years The Wurzels had releases in Australia, New Zealand, Holland, the USA, Canada and Germany followed up with several tours.
Altogether they released at least 12 singles and 6 albums abroad in the 1970’s – some of these even became chart hits! In Canada “Combine Harvester” reached #19 in the ‘Adult Contemporary Charts’ and “Cider Drinker” reached #11 and both singles also charted in Canada’s ‘Country Charts’

Not bad for a Scrumpy and Western band from Nailsea!!

Many thanks to Peter May for his help getting all this info together! And if you knows of any others we’ve missed then do Contact Us.

Benefit Show in Aid of Flood Victims.
We're pleased to announce a benefit show to be held at The Palace Theatre in Bridgwater, Somerset on Thursday 20th March in aid of the Somerset Flood Relief Fund and
The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution helping the communities and farmers in Somerset that have been affected by the floods and cut off for weeks. The support act will be Mad Dog Mcrea.

Tommy Banner of the band who lives in Taunton and near to the flooding says “The resilience of the community down here has been remarkable but there is only so much these people can do for themselves. We hope that this show will help aid and support their recovery over the coming months and help them to get back to normal as soon as possible”

Sil Willcox the band’s manager added “We had contemplated doing a charity song but these things take time to record and release and a concert can be established in a much shorter time frame to ensure
these people get the funds when they are most needed.

“The Wurzels, their crew and management are all giving their services for free, so too are APR Media, Midnight Mango, The Palace Venue and The Bridgwater Carnival” said Matt Bartlett of Midnight Mango Promotions.

Tickets are £12.50 in advance. www.midnightmango.co.uk or 0844 771 000
(Tickets for the previously scheduled event of The Wurzels at the Palace for 17th April will all be valid for this earlier date.)

Other donations can be made online at: www.somersetcf.org.uk and www.justgiving.com/rabi
